Nutrition Trends are doing more harm than good for many Americans. Promising quick fixes for weight loss and optimal health, we all see the appeal. Every couple of years there are diets that promise us the world, but hardly if ever deliver the optimal health and weight loss that is promised long term.
The problem is the weight loss and diet industry that has confused many Americans. They understand health and weight loss is a very emotional and intimate subject for us all, and they capitalize on our fears in the tune of billions of dollars. Once you understand why nutrition trends have you running in circles, you can then make the beginning changes that are necessary to stop the cycle.
Understand Why Nutrition Trends Work
Understand diet books are meant to appeal to your emotions. When we read things that sound familiar to us, we connect more with the words or individual. Emotions are powerful and the diet and weight loss industry know this!
If we understand what diet books are about, it will be easier to dismiss most of their ideas.
Most diet books tell you that a certain food is the reason for all your problems. By eliminating this certain food, you will regain your health again. They will have plenty of testimonials and success stories. Imagine if someone told you the reason you aren’t successful is because of this one thing. If you eliminate this one thing, you will be successful.
Does that make sense? It’s easy to blame a single food or a single action for why we aren’t where we want to be. Most likely, it’s a combination of many things.
Take The First Step - Stop The Cycle
First thing to do is to ask yourself why you want to lose weight or why you feel you need to be healthier. That may sound like a no brainer, but write it down.
What is your reason to lose weight?
Also, what is your idea of being “healthier”?
Definitions can be subjective, so define it for yourself.
As a personal trainer and nutritionist, I would like to see my clients understand the role of exercise and nutrition. Exercise for a majority of us should be improving our lives and reducing our risk of chronic diseases. Nutrition for a majority of us should be about having a healthy relationship with food and being able to eat what we want without feeling shame.
In saying that, most nutrition trends aka diet books may suggest certain foods will cause you great harm and make you gain weight. A traditional scare tactic that is great marketing, but very unlikely.
Try Working With A Balanced Approach Instead
After you have figured out why you want to be healthy and/or lose weight, do it in a way that doesn’t stress you out or ruin relationships.
Can you think of situations in which you have followed an exercise or diet routine that has done this? Here is an example of such things.
Being anti-social because your new workout program calls for 7 days/week, and has a strict protocol for 10 hours of sleep and 4 hours of meditation per day. A nutrition program that eliminates so many foods, when you go out all you order is water, hold the ice please.
Think about what is important to you as you figure out your weight loss and health journey. Remember, you’re in it for the long haul. Get your mind out of the diet book and blog gutter.
